LES 2 ALPES, FRANCE July 10, 2013 – Siblings Rachel and Gee Atherton (UK) have taken The Polygon Air DH, supported by Fox, by storm for the second consecutive year at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes. Rachel won the event handily ahead of Myriam Nicole (FR) with a margin of 9.86 seconds, while Gee was able to take the win with a margin of 4.01 ahead of runner-up Mick Hannah (AUS). This year’s course offered a few changes to keep riders charging all the way to the finish but remained close to its roots as fast, loose and steep with big jumps throughout.
Rachel Atherton has been undefeated in World Cup downhill races this season and took today’s win with 4:02.75. Myriam Nicole finished with a time of 4:12.61 and New Zealand’s Allanna Columb finished third with a time of 4:36.62.
“The track was awesome; it was gnarly after the rain this morning but when we raced, the sun had come out and the course was in perfect, tacky condition,” says Rachel Atherton about her win today. “It’s nice to just ride and have fun on the bike even though this is still racing. There’s still a lot of preparation at races [like this] and you still get nervous. At the end of the day it’s fast and it’s gnarly and you can still crash. This is definitely good preparation for World Cup racing.”
Gee Atherton has also been having a flawless season at World Cup downhill races this year. He continued his streak of wins today in the Air DH with a time of 3:32.37. Mick Hannah of the Hutchinson United Ride/POLYGON bicycles team was second with a time of 3:36.38 and Columbia’s Marcello Gutierrez rounded out the podium in third with a time of 3:37.19.
“Today was good and the track was tough,” says Gee Atherton about racing and training for the POLYGON Air DH supported by Fox at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes. “All through practice, it was getting rough and it became a new track because of all the weather changes. You really had to push hard but balance out speed; it’s quite physical and technical.”
